This year has been all about the virus, but even so, I haven’t let it stop me from talking about the suffrage fight. About halfway through the year, a foursome of suffragists joined my payroll — the Suffragette Quartet! Unlike humans, they can pose for the camera without being masked.
The Suffragette Quartet has been visiting suffrage sites you might want to see for yourself once the pandemic has ended and museums and historical sites are open again. So far, they’ve been to:
- Seneca Falls, NY, where the first women’s rights conference was held
- Suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage’s house in Fayetteville, NY
- The Vineland (NJ) Historical Society, which displays a 150-year-old women’s ballot box
- The Lucy Burns Museum at the former Occoquan Workhouse prison in Lorton, VA, where suffragists were jailed for picketing the White House
- The Ontario County Courthouse, where Susan B. Anthony was tried for voting illegally
- The “Double Sights” art installation in Princeton, NJ, which juxtaposes the racist and sexist views of President Woodrow Wilson with images of suffrage and civil rights activists
The Suffragette Quartet has many more sites to visit! To keep track of the Quartet’s travels, follow them at my facebook page (www.facebook.com/nancybkennedyauthor) or on Instagram (www.instagram.com/nbkauthor/). My ladies do get around!
